Home Extension Process in NSW — What to Expect
A home extension takes 6–14 months from consultation to completion depending on scope. Buildana (Lic. 487805C) manages the entire process.
Phase-by-Phase Timeline
Phase 1 — Assessment (1–2 weeks): Inspect existing house, assess structural condition, check zoning and setbacks, identify scope.
Phase 2 — Design (3–6 weeks): Extension designed to integrate with existing house. Floor plans, elevations, 3D renders.
Phase 3 — Documentation and approval: CDC 4–6 weeks total, DA 10–16 weeks total.
Phase 4 — Construction: • Small extension (40–60 sqm ground floor): 12–18 weeks • Medium extension (ground + first floor): 20–28 weeks • Major transformation (full renovation + extension): 24–36 weeks
Living During Construction
Ground floor rear extension: you can usually live in the house during most of the construction. The existing living areas remain functional until the new extension is connected.
First floor addition: you may need to move out during roof removal and structural work (4–8 weeks). Some homeowners remain in the house with temporary weather protection.
Full renovation + extension: typically requires moving out for the duration (3–6 months).
