What comes out of a 1970s bathroom
The tiles are the easy bit. Behind them, in a house built before about 1990, the wall lining is often fibre cement sheet that may contain asbestos. It gets tested before demolition. A positive result means licensed removal, sealed disposal and a clearance certificate before anyone else works in the room.
Under the floor, the original shower may have had nothing more than a mortar bed and hope. Galvanised supply lines rust shut over fifty years. Cast iron or earthenware waste pipes crack. Once the room is stripped, we see all of it.
Better now than in three years through the kitchen ceiling.

Falls, membranes and the licence that matters
Water has to run to the waste, not the door. The floor bed gets screeded with a consistent fall, and for a step-free shower we either set the floor down or use a linear drain along one edge.
Then the membrane. The Australian Standard for wet-area waterproofing sets where it goes and how high it turns up the walls. We use a waterproofer licensed in NSW for that work, and we photograph the membrane before a single tile goes on.
An exhaust fan ducted outside the roof space finishes the job. Steam trapped in the ceiling is how mould gets started.

Week one: strip-out and any asbestos work. Week two: plumbing and electrical rough-in, new linings, screed. Then membrane and cure, tiling, and fit-off of the vanity, toilet, tapware and screens. Three to five weeks is typical for a single bathroom, depending on what the strip-out reveals and whether anything moves.
Moving the toilet or shower changes the drainage, which can mean cutting the slab in a Blacktown house built on one. It's doable. It adds cost and time, so decide early.
Approval and budget
Replacing a bathroom within the same room, without structural changes, is usually exempt development. Knock out a wall, move into another room or add a bathroom where there wasn't one, and the project may need complying development or a Blacktown City Council DA.
